Survey revealed 40% of parent respondents exercised stringent control over children’s use of laisee

One of the best moments for parents to teach children about money is when the kids are receiving laisee money. However, IFEC’s The Chin Family found that close to 40% of the parents surveyed* exercised stringent control over how their chidlren use the laisee money. Just 20% allowed their children to choose how to spend the money freely.

The survey also found that over 80% of the parent respondents were giving pocket money to the children, mainly for practical needs such as covering daily expenses. The average amount of pocket money primary, junior secondary and senior secondary students receiving were HK$433, HK$674 and $817 respectively.

*The survey was conducted in October 2015. Data was collected through face-to-face street interviews with 401 parents.
