Given the prevailing threat of the Coronavirus, a healthy and nourishing diet is as important as good personal and household hygiene. Here are some immune-boosting foods that I try to incorporate into my diet.
Protein
Our body needs protein to create immune cells, and this important nutrient can be found in eggs, milk, fish, chicken meat and soybean products, such as tofu.
Omega-3
Mackerel, salmon, nuts and flaxseed are rich in omega-3, a type of fatty acid that can help prevent inflammation to alleviate the pressure on the immune system.
Vitamin C
Pomegranates, blackcurrants and kiwifruits contain a high dose of Vitamin C, a powerful antioxidant that can strengthen immunity. However, WHO recommends a daily Vitamin C intake of just 90mg for an adult male and 75mg for a female. Any excessive intake of Vitamin C will only be discharged from the body. A balanced diet provides enough Vitamin C as is, making supplements unnecessary.
Edible Fungi
Seaweed and fungi, such as mushroom, kelp and laver, contain polysaccharides that can activate immune cells and regulate the immune system.
Probiotics
Yogurt, cheese and kimchi are rich in probiotics that facilitate digestion and maintain intestinal health.
For us elderly, we tend to eat less in terms of portions and variety Inevitably, absorbing less nutrients will result in a weakened immune system. While there are many tonic products that claim to be powerful immune boosters, elderly friends should always consult with doctors to determine if these products fit their needs.
A healthy lifestyle is the key to strong immunity. Apart from a balanced diet, we should also exercise regularly, get enough sleep and have a positive mindset.
